Theater is a powerful medium of self expression, and its benefits to children include creativity, confidence building and communication skills. This is why theater has been made available as part of school curriculums. However, access to the arts remains limited for many in India, especially for young women and children from underserved communities.Â
The lack of opportunities for theater in disadvantaged communities not only deprives young people of creative outlets but also denies them an important and effective pathway of personal growth. Studies have proven that students of performing arts tend to have better academic performance, self-esteem, and resilience while facing challenges.Additionally, theater can be considered a significant factor for those young women who are being further restricted by societal and cultural limitations.
Drama Queens was created in response to the urgent need for open, inclusive spaces for theater exploration and participation among young people, especially women. This initiative emphasizes not only access but also the chance to learn from industry professionals, experience a fully-equipped performance stage and be inspired through the stories of women changing the Indian theater scene. Through these initiatives, Drama Queens works towards a moment in time when all children can find their voices and build resilience through creative channels.
